What exactly is inside the honeydumplings® mat?
Each of the 81 pockets of the water-repellent mat is filled with 100% organic buckwheat hulls grown and cleaned in Quebec, Canada. We purchase our hulls from Aliments Trigone who are part of the organic Consumers Association (www.organicconsumers.org). Bio-Ecocert-Guarantee (www.garantiebio-ecocert.qc.ca – French)
as certified by the Quebec Counsel of Accreditation.
Why are buckwheat hulls hypoallergenic?
Buckwheat is not actually a wheat but a fruit related to the rhubarb family. The hulls used in our products are the buckwheat’s outer husk. Therefore, people with grain allergies are generally not sensitive to buckwheat hulls. Less than .016% of people have a reaction to buckwheat hulls. Buckwheat hulls are naturally dust mite and mould resistant so there won’t be any creepy things growing or crawling around inside your mat or pillow.
How do I care for my honeydumplings® mat?
The removable cover can be washed in water temperatures up to 105°F/40°C and dried up to the MEDIUM setting on a tumble drier. The water-repellent buckwheat mat should be spot cleaned only and aired out regularly. And please, do not heat the mat inside the microwave.
Are pesticides used on the buckwheat hulls?
No, in fact, the buckwheat hulls, as well as the bamboo textiles used in our products, are grown free of pesticides, fertilizers, GMO’s and are 100% biodegradable. The unbleached bamboo and organic cotton sherpa meet the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 test for the ecological quality of textiles and absence of harmful substances. Both are made in Canada.
How is the bamboo manufactured - is it safe for the environment?
Our bamboo fiber is manufactured in a closed loop viscosing process. In a closed loop system, no chemicals are released into the environment. Gasses are scrubbed and waste materials reprocessed or neutralized for disposal. Sodium hydroxide is used to process the bamboo fiber. It's routinely used in the processing of most textile fibers including organic cotton. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) lists sodium hydroxide as a suitable chemical for use on certified organic products. Sulphuric acid is used too. Sulphuric acid is another common industrial chemical that is routinely used in textile processing, dyes, and water treatment.
None of these chemicals are discharged into the environment, nor are they considered harmful to humans or the environment under normal industrial or consumer usage. There are no traces or residues of these chemicals on the finished fibers.
